History

1940s

Our chapter was called the Iowa Industrial Training
Association and was founded September, 1947 in Ames, Iowa. The chapter was affiliated with National ASTD on December 3, 1948. ASTD in the 40s and 50s stood for the "American Society for Training Directors".

1950s

In 1954 the chapter's name changed to Iowa Chapter ASTD.
Dues were $2.

1960s

A Regional Conference was devoted to Manpower Planning and
Management by Objectives. Membership shrank to 24 members. Dues were $10.

1970s

Membership was still low and permanent nametags were used.
Tom Sally served 2 terms as president. Organizational Development was
starting to take hold in company training.

1980s

Eastern Iowa began their own Hawkeye chapter. Training and
Development was becoming a noteworthy and recognized profession. Adult
learning was emphasized. Tom Peters, Ken Blanchard and Peter Drucker
were keynoters. Darlene Bradner became the first woman president. Community Service was created. The chapter was recognized with National awards. 31 competencies for the training and development field were created from National ASTD. A Regional Conference was held at the Hotel Fort Des
Moines.

1990s

National asked the Iowa chapter to pilot the Quality
Improvement Process. The organizational wheel was developed. Special
Interest Groups (SIGs) and the marketing committee were created. The ISU
Student chapter had renewed interest. The first Trainers Institute
graduated 17 new trainers. An Advanced Trainers Institute had 27 complete
the 7-month series. Power lunches were held downtown. Accelerated
Learning, CBT, Distance Learning and ADA were topics for programs. Power
Training on the Road, Networking lunches, Bits and Bytes and Mentoring were
added services to members. A Chapter Administrator was hired to provide
support. Two Technology Conferences and a Regional Conference were held.
Succession planning and board retreats were started. Member surveys were
conducted. Career Day was created as a way for members to learn from each
other. The name of the chapter became Central Iowa ASTD. A Website was
being developed. Members used email as a way to communicate.

1998

The year's theme was "Celebrating the Past with Visions of
the Future". Every program and event mentioned the anniversary year. A logo
was created. Past presidents were interviewed. A celebration on December
3, 1998 marks the 50th year. Nationally, only four chapter celebrated
their 50th.
